Place & story
The creamery begins
Local farmers and curate John Crowley founded Drinagh’s cooperative in 1923. It was registered on 13 November, and the creamery began operating on 12 May 1924. The cooperative’s own history describes farmers bringing their milk by donkey cart or horse cart. The business later expanded through a network of West Cork branches. [2]
Changing milk collection
The cooperative records a major change with the Carbery factory at Ballineen and the introduction of refrigerated bulk tanks on farms from around 1970. Milk intake at branch creameries ceased as the collection system changed, and some branches closed. The organisation subsequently developed a wider mix of agricultural and retail services. [2]
Moving through the village
Drinagh National School preserves a girls’ roll book dating from 1869. Its older building closed in 1964 after being judged unsuitable. The school’s photographs show children being escorted through the village to the replacement building that year. A formal opening and naming ceremony followed in May 1966, bringing relatives, invited guests and local residents together. [3]
