Place & story

Two kinds of milling

Newmills combined a corn mill, grinding barley, oats and imported maize, with a flax mill supplying the linen industry. A public house, forge and scutcher’s cottage formed part of the wider enterprise. The surviving working waterwheel makes the use of water power visible within this industrial landscape west of Letterkenny. [2]

People & connections

Patrick Gallagher’s investment

Patrick Gallagher bought the mills from the Devine family in 1892. The corn mill had fallen out of use, but improvements around 1907 brought a new waterwheel and machinery. The purchase also included a residence, shop, public house and farm, showing that the family’s business extended beyond processing crops. Gallagher ownership continued until P. F. Gallagher’s death in 1980. [3]

Flax during the war

During the Second World War, P. F. Gallagher responded to renewed demand for flax and British grants intended to secure linen supplies. An older single-storey flax mill was demolished in the early 1940s and replaced. The buildings therefore record changing markets and production methods as well as the longer survival of water-powered industry. [3]

Evidence beside the tailrace

Archaeological testing east of the mill complex in May 2025 examined the site of a proposed workshop and depot. Richard Crumlish recorded topsoil, fine gravel and clay, with no finds or archaeological features. He suggested that the gravel could reflect flooding near the River Swilly. This was a limited investigation beside the tailrace, rather than an excavation of the mills themselves. [4]
