Place & story
An early golfing institution
Portsalon Golf Club was founded in 1891, with an original course designed by Charles Thompson of Portrush. It was one of the nine clubs that founded the Golfing Union of Ireland. Its links occupy the shore of Ballymastocker Bay beneath the Knockalla Mountains, in Croaghross at Portsalon. [2]
Reshaping the course
A major redevelopment led by Pat Ruddy in 2000 added nine new holes and lengthened the layout. Further work under Paul McGinley included changes to bunkers and the opening tee. The modern course therefore incorporates substantial redesign alongside its nineteenth-century origins. [2]
