Place & story

Saint Columba’s church

Saint Columba’s church was built in 1854 and renovated in 2009, according to the Diocese of Raphoe. Its cemetery dates from 1941, with a further cemetery added in 2005. The diocesan record also identifies surviving parish registers, including marriages from 1880 and baptisms from 1882. These dates document successive developments in the church’s provision for the local community. [2]

Folklore & tradition

The New Year pilgrimage

A contemporary report describes hundreds gathering for the Doon Well vigil at the beginning of 2012. Worship began at Saint Columba’s in Termon, followed later in the evening by a procession to the well. At midnight pilgrims recited the Rosary, with some following the customary practice of praying barefoot. The report records participation from across the north-west, illustrating how the church and the nearby well were linked through an organised communal observance. [3]

A club formed through the school

Termon GAA traces its formation to a 1963 approach by Patrick Helferty, Seamus Harkin and Johnny McCafferty to teacher Danny McBride. A meeting followed in the old school at Kilmacrennan that December. The first team borrowed yellow jerseys from Letterkenny Technical College; the club adopted maroon and white in 1967. A dedicated minor board followed in 1986, and a ladies’ board was established in 1992. [4]

An All-Ireland title

On 30 November 2014, Termon defeated Mourneabbey by 3–12 to 1–13 in the All-Ireland senior ladies’ club football final. Captain Geraldine McLaughlin contributed 3–8 and received the player-of-the-match award. The club records the victory as the first senior All-Ireland club title won by a Donegal side, marking a major achievement for a team whose ladies’ organisation had begun just over two decades earlier.
