Place & story
At the canal entrance
Wattlebridge lies at the River Finn entrance to the Ulster Canal. Waterways Ireland dates the canal’s opening to 1842 and describes persistent problems with narrow locks, water shortages and restricted passing space. Despite successive changes of management and attempts to improve it, the canal declined. Its last lighter entered in October 1929, and formal abandonment followed in 1931. [2]
Restoring navigation
The river entrance gained renewed importance during restoration work. Waterways Ireland records dredging the Finn at Wattlebridge in 2018 and constructing a new bridge at nearby Derrykerrib, allowing boats to reach Castle Saunderson. This modern intervention changed access through the locality, reconnecting a section of waterway whose commercial role had ended decades earlier. [2]
A Gaelic Sunday account
A local account supplied by Michael McPhillips to the Irish News recalls Wattlebridge Éire Ógs playing during Gaelic Sunday in 1918. It tells how police stopped the match, after which islanders transported players and goalposts in flat-bottomed boats to Derrykerrib, where play resumed. Reported a century later, the episode survives as a distinctive sporting memory tied to the river and its islands. [3]
