Place & story

Three schools become one

Saint Conleth’s National School opened in Kilconly through the amalgamation of three smaller parish schools in 1975: Castlegrove, Brooklawn and Tobberoe. The school’s own account records an initial staff of three teachers and roughly one hundred pupils. Enrolment grew through the 1980s, reaching 159 in the early 1990s. The central school brought children from several rural catchments into the village and retained the name of the parish’s patron, Conleth. [2]

People & connections

A first move into senior football

Kilconly’s football club reached senior status for the first time in 2011 by winning Galway’s intermediate championship. The team defeated Oughterard at Pearse Stadium by 2–5 to 0–7. Captain Kevin Brady led a side managed by Bernard Brady, with Adrian Murphy contributing a goal and two points from play. Contemporary reporting dated the club’s foundation to 1943, placing the breakthrough almost seven decades into its history. [3]

Young people recording memories

Kilconly Foróige Club used a laptop and projector grant to create an oral-history video with grandparents and other older community members. Foróige’s 2018 citizenship-project booklet records how the young people prepared questions about changing fashions, activities and advice for the next generation. They edited the interviews and screened the finished video at a community evening. The project made collecting local memories a shared activity between generations, with the young participants shaping the questions and presentation. [4]
