Place & story
The church beside the lough
Galway County Council’s record describes Levally Catholic Church in Cappadavock as dated 1948. It has a gabled front, a lower chancel and a side porch. The inventory description reproduced in the record places the modest building beside Levally Lough. [2]
A link with Milltown
Noel Carney’s account for Milltown Heritage Group records that Fr William Byrne’s ordination chalice was presented to Lavally in 1948. Lavally’s pastoral council later transferred it to Milltown Heritage Centre after discussions between the communities, receiving another chalice and a vestment in exchange. The object connected the two places through the memory of the priest and Irish-language writer. [3]
