Place & story
Mervue House and Royal Tara
The University of Galway’s Landed Estates database identifies Mervue, also called Merview, as a Joyce family house in Ballybaanbeg. It dates the house to about 1777. The Joyces sold it to Royal Tara China in 1953, and a fire badly damaged the original building in 1957. The company’s use of the property connected an older landed estate with Galway’s twentieth-century manufacturing history. [2]
Building a football home
Mervue United was founded in 1960. In a 2022 interview with Cian O’Connell, long-serving club figure Declan McDonnell recalled adults organising football for local children and the difficulty of finding a settled pitch. The club eventually established itself at Fahy’s Field. He described ten members guaranteeing £4,000 each in 1992, with a sports grant helping to fund the first dressing rooms. [3]
