Place & story
A parish with several names
New Inn’s parish records preserve the older names Grange, Bullaun and Killaan. The National Library’s digitised register includes baptisms beginning in October 1827 and marriages from the same month. The diocese is cautious about dating New Inn church: it considers construction after 1855 probable, rather than giving a definite foundation year. These records distinguish the parish’s documented history from the uncertain age of its church building. [2] [3]
Postal links
Woodlawn Heritage Group records that New Inn’s post office opened in 1857, four years after the office at nearby Woodlawn. The group marked the closure of both offices with a social evening in January 2019. Its account places the village’s postal service within a network that connected the surrounding east Galway communities for more than a century and a half. [4]
Mummers and the community centre
The Mummers Festival developed as a fundraiser for community facilities. Writing about its thirty-sixth staging in 2014, festival chairman Michael Mullins described competitions in music, singing, dancing and storytelling at New Inn Leisure Centre. Junior and juvenile sections encouraged younger performers. Festival proceeds helped improve the community facilities that the event had originally been created to support. [5]
