Place & story
Ireland’s first Lotto millionaire
Rita Power of Power’s Cross became Ireland’s first Lotto millionaire in 1989. A Connacht Tribune obituary in 2023 recalled how a second ticket, bought at her request in Portumna, brought the win. Rita and her husband John Joe continued working their small farm at Power’s Cross and shared the winnings among their family. [2]
Storm damage in 2025
Reporting after Storm Éowyn in February 2025, RTÉ visited organic grower Dermot O’Mara at Power’s Cross, outside Abbey. His polytunnels had been destroyed, disrupting a business supplying shops and restaurants across Galway and Tipperary. He appealed for government help to repair the damage and restart production, illustrating the storm’s impact on local horticulture. [3]
