Place & story
From Seaview to classrooms
The Dominican community moved from central Galway to Seaview, a small house on Taylor’s Hill, on 4 June 1845. Its institutional history records the opening of a day school in 1858, with lessons held in the convent parlour, followed by the Mount St Joseph’s boarding school in 1859. [2]
Growing enrolments brought successive additions. St Dominic’s opened in 1901 and served as the boarding school until 1975. Rosary School was completed in 1958. A new school building followed in 2007, continuing the educational use of the Taylor’s Hill site. [2]
