Place & story
The 1894 school
Kilclare’s stone-built national school opened on 10 October 1894, replacing an earlier school near Drumbrannad Crossroads. Marie Donohoe’s history records a 99-year site lease and a building designed for 120 pupils. By the time of her account, the old school had been restored and was used as a paint shop. [2]
Returning in 2014
Past pupils returned in August 2014 for the school’s 120th anniversary. Roll books rescued from damp storage were displayed, a commemorative history was launched and a plaque unveiled. Donohoe, the organising committee’s secretary, describes former pupils travelling from Britain and the United States to meet school friends again. [2]
