Place & story

People & connections

The Lawder family at Mough

The Lawders established several branches in Leitrim and Cavan, with Mough becoming the site of the house known as Lawderdale. University of Galway estate research identifies William Lawder as its owner at Griffith’s Valuation, when the property was assessed at £18. By 1906, James Ormsby Lawder held it and its recorded valuation had risen to £30. These returns trace successive ownership without establishing when particular alterations were made. [2] [3]

A nineteenth-century country house

The national architectural survey dates Lawderdale House to about 1850. Its two-storey main block has a projecting gabled entrance bay, sash windows and a hipped roof. The survey also records modern alterations, so the building’s present outline should not all be assigned to the nineteenth century. The older name Mough remains attached to its townland and appears as the house’s previous name in the survey. [4]

Buildings around the residence

Lawderdale’s surviving estate fabric extends beyond the residence. Two-storey stone outbuildings surround a rear yard, while an eastern range is dated 1875 by the architectural survey. A walled garden lies to the east and a ruined private chapel occupies an adjoining field. Sandstone dressings on the outbuildings mark the attention given to the working buildings as well as to the family house. [4]
