Place & story
Schooling and the Bective estate
Richard Bolton provided a site for a national school at Robinstown in 1840 and became its patron. The local historical society records that his father had supplied land for a chapel and school in 1800. Patronage later became contentious: a dispute with the local priest concerned school visits and the appointment of teachers. In 1861 the school became non-vested, ending Bolton’s influence over it. [2]
The old school at the crossroads
Robinstown Old School dates to around 1841. Its seven-bay frontage and central gabled porch survive at the crossroads. Scoil Mhuire gives its own foundation year as 1946. [3] [4]
Rebuilding the Church of the Assumption
The Irish Architectural Archive identifies James Rupert Edward Boyd Barrett as the architect responsible for rebuilding and extending Robinstown’s Church of the Assumption. Its entry cites a report in the Irish Builder of 2 February 1963, records a cost of £20,000 and names C. Murray of Navan as the main contractor. This contemporary reference gives the church project a firmer historical setting than the broad mid twentieth-century date in the protected-structure list. [5]
