Place & story

A school serving several communities

St Oliver Plunkett's National School at Tossey, Loughmourne, was built in 1977 to replace schools at Carrickatee, Aghmakerr, Kilkitt, Laggan and Laragh. Its own history records a further development in 2007, when the Department of Education and Science invited it to establish an autism class within the mainstream school. Bishop Liam S. McDaid formally launched the class in June 2012, marking another stage in the school's service to the surrounding rural communities. [2]

Temple Moyle by Lough Egish

At Lattonfasky on the north-eastern shore of Lough Egish, roughly four kilometres south-east of Lough Morne, Temple Moyle survives as a ruined rectangular chapel within a graveyard. Archer Heritage's 2022 conservation plan identifies late-medieval Gothic features, including window openings, a recessed cupboard in the eastern wall and beam-holes associated with a screen and western gallery. The report proposes a fifteenth-century date through architectural comparison with other Irish churches. [3]

Recording and conserving the ruins

Lough Egish Community Development commissioned the conservation plan following surveys in 2021. Archaeologists supervised clearance around the chapel in September, making obscured walls and fallen stone more visible. Architectural recording, drone photography and three-dimensional modelling documented the structure before proposed repairs. The resulting plan identified weakened gable walls and erosion of mortar as problems requiring specialist conservation, establishing a programme for care rather than claiming that restoration had already been completed.
