Place & story

Saint Mary’s rebuilt

Saint Mary’s church began as a chapel in 1810 and was rebuilt after fire in 1924–25 to designs by Rudolf Butler. The architectural survey identifies the earlier T-shaped plan within Butler’s reconstruction. Round-headed windows, an exposed timber roof and a stone bellcote characterise the building. Its mix of surviving layout and later Byzantine-Romanesque detailing records the adaptation of a pre-Emancipation chapel rather than a wholly new church on an unrelated site. [2]

A unified parish club

Seán McDermotts was formed in February 1961 following discussions at Saint Mary’s Hall in Three Mile House. The existing local team disbanded and plans for another team were set aside in favour of one club representing Kilmore and Drumsnatt parish. This followed earlier football activity by Threemilehouse Healy’s and Corcaghan Sons of Erin. The club credits Pat Connolly of Drumuck with proposing the name commemorating Seán Mac Diarmada. [3]

Building sports and cultural facilities

The club purchased land at Drumgarve near the village in 1973 and opened its playing field and dressing rooms in July 1979. A sports complex followed, officially opened by broadcaster Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh in March 1990. Its cultural activities also achieved national recognition: the club records All-Ireland Scór honours in instrumental music in 1994 and team dancing in 1998, alongside its football competitions and community fundraising.
