Place & story

The chapel recorded in 1837

Samuel Lewis's 1837 account of Tisrara parish locates its Catholic chapel at Four Roads. It was then a small thatched building in poor condition. His parish-wide description also lists two subscription-supported schools and four hedge schools. The entry records modest places of worship and education in the surrounding countryside, without locating all those schools within the village itself. [2]

Conserving Tisrara’s medieval remains

The Four Roads–Tisrara Tidy Towns Committee received the Heritage Council's heritage initiative award in 1997. The £2,000 prize recognised its conservation of Tisrara's medieval church and graveyard. Local research accompanied that practical work: the restoration committee had published Jim Higgins's archaeological and historical study of the church at Carrowntemple in 1995. Conservation and a substantial written account thus developed together around the site. [3] [4]

A Connacht hurling title

Four Roads hurling club dates its foundation to 1904. Its outstanding provincial success came in 1988, when it defeated Galway champions Abbeyknockmoy in the Connacht senior club final and qualified for an All-Ireland semi-final. A later GAA interview records how deeply hurling shaped local childhood, with players recalling going to matches with their fathers and beginning the game at an early age. [5]
