Place & story
School building on the Frenchpark estate
The National Library of Ireland’s De Freyne Papers preserve correspondence from 1883–85 about building schools at Lisacul and three other places on the Frenchpark estate. The files include letters from Laurence Gillooly, the Bishop of Elphin. They place Lisacul’s school provision within negotiations involving the estate and the Catholic Church, rather than recording an isolated building project. The catalogue does not by itself establish when construction was completed. [2]
A postmaster’s case in the archives
Military pension files preserve the case of John Merriman, Lisacul’s assistant postmaster, who reported an armed robbery inNovember 1930. The stolen cash had been intended for Dáil loan payments. Subsequent Garda inquiries led to his arrest on an embezzlement charge, but the Central Criminal Court found him not guilty inMarch 1931 and discharged him. The Military Archives’ account notes that his pension payments, delayed during the proceedings, resumed afterwards. [3]
The Golden Miles
Lisacul’s Golden Mile initiative began in 2003 when local Foróige members entered a stretch at Derry near Cloonagh Lake in the county competition and won its Best Hedgerow award. A wider community group subsequently worked on Kilrooan Golden Mile and Mary Kate’s Golden Mile. The former includes the old graveyard and an ancient approach route; the latter brings together hedgerow and peatland habitats. Restoration, scrub clearance and interpretation signs became part of the group’s continuing work. [4]
