Place & story

The church at Newtown

The 2005 county graveyard survey records a church at Whitehall from 1824, replaced by the present building in 1896. It places the churchyard in Newtown townland, within Termonbarry parish. [2]

From Corraun School to Whitehall

Whitehall National School was formerly called Corraun National School. Its own history dates the original building to 1892, when boys and girls occupied separate classrooms. Father Eugene White directed the building programme, which also included the parish church and parochial house. Major school renovations followed in 1965, with further extensions over the years, including one completed in 2017. [3]

Folklore & tradition

A boat associated with the saint

William Grattan-Flood’s 1907 account of Saint Berach, also known as Barry, records an object identified as the saint’s boat beside Whitehall’s Catholic church. He attributed its recovery in 1890 to Dr M. F. Cox. The passage provides an early published record of the devotional association; it does not establish that the object was a vessel used by the saint.
