Place & story

A school for two rural communities

Killen Primary School opened on 1 May 1936 with ninety-seven pupils and Robert Kelly as its first principal. It replaced the smaller schools at Aughnahoo and Ganvaughan after an inspection and discussions with parents. A 1932 meeting had agreed on Killen as the site for the new central school. The first building contained two classrooms, a cookery room, a cloakroom and a play shed. Its establishment brought children from neighbouring rural districts into a shared educational centre in the village. [2]

Replacement and renewal

Extensions in the 1970s enabled the school to accommodate three teachers, while the nearby Orange Hall sometimes provided extra teaching space. Pupil numbers later declined, reaching thirty-six during the 1990s, before recovering. An entirely new building replaced the original premises in 2008. Parent Ivan Sproule officially opened it on 11 June that year. Five classrooms, larger outdoor spaces and playing fields changed the school’s facilities substantially, while retaining its role serving Killen and the surrounding area. [2]

People & connections

Andy Bogle and Killen Rangers

Killen Rangers began in 1982, with Andy Bogle managing the team for its first ten years. The Fermanagh and Western Football League’s account credits him with taking the club from the third division to the first within six years. He later helped establish and manage the youth side, introducing players including Richard Clarke, Andrew Crawford and Gareth Sproule who went on to Irish League football. His contribution extended into club administration and representation on the league and association committees. [3]

A first Mercer League title

In May 2025, Killen Rangers won the Mercer League for the first time. A 2–1 victory over Enniskillen Town United settled a match in which either side could have become champions, with Graeme Young scoring the decisive goal. League secretary Ciara Crawford presented the trophy to captain Richard Clarke. The result marked a new achievement forty-three years after the village club’s foundation. [4]
