Place & story
The Grand Hotel
The Grand Hotel was completed in 1806 to serve Shannon Harbour’s canal trans-shipping village. Its seven-bay façade rises through three storeys above a basement, with a stepped central projection crowned by a pediment. Round-headed recesses frame the central windows, and stone steps lead to the main doorway. [2]
The harbour master’s residence
The nearby harbour master’s house was also built in 1806, specifically for that role. Its two-storey central block stands over a basement between lower flanking bays. A round-headed stone entrance surround, spoked fanlight, limestone steps and iron railings distinguish the front facing the canal setting. [3]
