Place & story
John McCredy McAlery’s new club
Belfast businessman John McCredy McAlery advertised an opening practice for Cliftonville Association Football Club on 20 September 1879. A week later the club played its first match against Quidnuncs, a local rugby side, losing 2–1. The game took place at Cliftonville Cricket Club. This beginning connected the new association code with an existing sporting institution in the district. [2]
The move to Solitude
Cliftonville moved to Solitude in 1890, taking an enclosure across Cliftonville Road from the cricket club, with Cliftonville Recreation Company as landlord. The move coincided with the establishment of the Irish Football League, whose first president was Cliftonville's M. McNeice. Solitude became the club's enduring home, preserving a continuous connection between the neighbourhood and organised football. [3]
The long debate over amateur status
Cliftonville formally adopted professional status at its annual meeting on 22 June 1972, after decades of debate about payment and player recruitment. The change was gradual: the first match under the new constitution still featured an entirely amateur squad. Bangor forward Johnny Cochrane became the first professional signing in November 1973, marking a practical change after the constitutional decision. [4]
