Place & story

The old deer park

Deerpark and Oldpark recall an enclosed deer park established by Arthur Chichester early in the seventeenth century. The Belfast Street Names project traces its later history through a lease granted to merchant David Lyons in April 1755. His family built a Georgian house on the estate. By 1877, George Benn described its forty-two-acre grounds as being advertised for development into villas and streets. [2]

Naming the suburban streets

Belfast's Improvement Committee approved the name Deerpark Road for an Oldpark Development Company street off Alliance Avenue in October 1906. Further approvals for Deerpark Road and Deerpark Drive followed in April 1928. Later development extended the naming pattern: Deerpark Gardens and Deerpark Parade were approved in October 1965, followed by Deerpark Grove in September 1966. These dates chart successive phases of suburban growth. [2] [3] [4]

A congregation at the road junction

Oldpark Presbyterian congregation began on 1 December 1901 as Belfast expanded into the district. Its first accommodation was a disused farm building on Oldpark Road facing Deerpark Road, according to the congregation's institutional history. The congregation survived wartime damage but later declined as the area's population changed. It closed its doors on 30 September 2007, subsequently becoming part of the combined congregational history preserved by Immanuel Church. [5]
