Place & story

Killymurris Presbyterian Church

Killymurris Presbyterian Church was built in 1860 and retains the simple rectangular form often called a barn church. Its interior includes pitch-pine pews, stairs and a U-shaped gallery, with a tall pulpit emphasising the importance of preaching. Outside, a small bell tower and a copper ventilation cupola distinguish the roofline. A large marble and limestone memorial commemorates John Wilson, the minister under whom the present building was constructed. [2]

A creamery becomes a community hall

Glarryford Young Farmers’ Club began in 1943, meeting in Clough Church Hall with the support of the minister, Robert Lennox. Drama became part of its activities from the early years. In 1953 the club bought Glarryford Creamery and converted it into premises opened as the Farmers’ Hall in 1961. A smaller hall followed in 1975. The club’s seventieth-anniversary account described agricultural competitions, public speaking and drama as enduring parts of its work. [3]

The esker and the retreating ice

The Glarryford esker is a ridge of sediment deposited by a stream flowing north beneath the retreating Lough Neagh ice mass. It lies in a channel cut through bedrock, beside drumlins and other deposits that preserve evidence of earlier ice movement. The ridge and neighbouring mounds form an Area of Special Scientific Interest. Their arrangement helps geologists reconstruct the changing streams, ice and gravel deposits at the close of the last Ice Age. [4]
