Place & story
The school at the steps
Loanends Primary School dates its foundation to 1872 and remembers its earlier premises as the school at the steps. Rebuilt in 1908, it also accommodated evacuees from Belfast during wartime. In September 2004 the institution moved to a new £1.6 million building on the Seven Mile Straight. Its account links the changing school buildings with both rural education and the displacement of children from the city. [2]
A partnership with Killead
Loanends Presbyterian congregation was linked with neighbouring Killead in 1976. Killead’s history records a joint week of mission services in 1978, from which a shared Bible study group developed. The congregations marked forty years of the partnership in October 2016 with a dinner at the Templeton Hotel, where former minister W. D. Weir recalled serving both churches. The linkage joined two congregations while retaining their local identities. [3]
