Place & story

Samuel Allen’s bleach mill

Linen merchant Samuel Allen established a bleach mill and drying ground at Millbrook in 1776. Historian Nick Kingsley’s research on the Allen family records that he operated the concern until 1801. Allen’s later purchase of the Lisconnan estate in 1788 places the Millbrook enterprise within the story of a merchant family whose linen business helped finance landed property elsewhere in County Antrim. [2]

Records of the linen works

The Public Record Office of Northern Ireland preserves thirteen account books from the Millbrook Bleaching and Finishing Company at Larne. Covering 1906–1940, they record quantities and varieties of linen cloth woven or repaired. Catalogued as D 3135/1, these surviving business records provide a route into the working history of the local textile industry. [3]
