Place & story

A mill village

Flax spinning began on the Mossley site in 1834. Water and steam powered its machinery. After buying the mill in 1859, the Campbell family expanded the works and developed the village with workers’ housing, a school and a sports pavilion. [2]

A new public life

Newtownabbey Borough Council bought the former mill in 1996, rescuing it from demolition and beginning its restoration. The first phase opened in June 2000. Theatre at The Mill followed on 30 January 2010, with an opening concert by the Ulster Orchestra. Its 400 seats brought live performance into the former industrial complex. [2] [3]
