Place & story

A post-war terminal

Nutt’s Corner’s wartime buildings were adapted for civilian passengers before a new terminal opened in November 1948. A 1963 British European Airways magazine account, signed “M”, describes its waiting rooms, traffic hall, restaurant and offices. The writer remembered the difficult winter transfer of 1946–47, when snow and frozen roads complicated the movement of equipment. [2]

The final transfer

BEA announced that its Belfast services would move to Aldergrove from 26 September 1963. The magazine’s eyewitness account follows vans shuttling desks, chairs, lockers and equipment out of Nutt’s Corner while passenger business continued. Station Superintendent Ralph Thurley had held that post throughout the airport’s civil operation, from the transfer in December 1946 to its closure. [2]
