Place & story

A school for a growing district

The growth of housing at Pond Park prompted a proposal in 1980 to move Brownlee Primary School from Wallace Avenue to the new residential area. Parents and governors opposed the transfer. Brownlee stayed where it was, while a separate Pond Park Primary School opened in 1981. Pond Park’s own school history records another change in 2009, when it moved into a new building. [2] [3]

The Rathvarna building

In June 2009 the former Rathvarna Teachers’ Resource Centre on Pond Park Road became the subject of a conservation campaign. A proposal to demolish the house and replace it with eight dwellings drew an objection from local architect Nicola Waddington. Her concern extended to the mature trees around the building. The contemporary newspaper report records both a request to protect the house and a request to preserve its trees. [4]

People & connections

Ronnie Adams and Pond Park House

Rally driver Ronnie Adams lived with his family at Pond Park House after returning to Northern Ireland from childhood years in Shropshire. His 2004 obituary identifies the house as the place where his interest in motor sport developed. Adams later won the 1956 Monte Carlo Rally in a Jaguar Mark VIIM, with Frank Bigger and Derek Johnston. Jaguar’s heritage collection includes a Roy Nockolds painting commemorating their victory.
