Place & story

Land and water for linen

The McCance family’s linen business expanded at Suffolk in 1797 through leases of land and water rights. William McCance already operated a bleach green, while his nephew John entered the trade and worked with John Stoupe. Eileen Black’s research for Lisburn Historical Society traces their use of Suffolk and Glenville, showing how access to land and flowing water underpinned the enterprise. [2]

Suffolk House

John McCance lived at Suffolk from 1811 and rebuilt Suffolk House in 1824. Black identifies an illustration in the 1832 publication Belfast Scenery as evidence of its imposing appearance. The house expressed the wealth generated by the linen business. Her account suggests that, after its rebuilding, bleaching operations were concentrated at Glenville rather than beside the residence. People & connections

A public career

McCance’s interests extended into banking and politics. He joined the private bank of Orr, Sloan and Montgomery in 1821 and chaired the management committee when it became the Northern Bank in 1824. Elected MP for Belfast in January 1835, he died in London that August. His Suffolk connection therefore links the district’s manufacturing history with Belfast’s financial and parliamentary life.
