Place & story

The Throne Children’s Hospital

Architect Timothy Hevey designed the Throne Children’s Hospital on Whitewell Road in 1872–74. The Irish Architectural Archive’s dictionary describes a French Gothic building commissioned for Samuel and John Martin of Shrigley, with H. & J. Martin of Belfast as contractors. Samuel Martin had purchased the site around 1871 for children’s and convalescent hospital provision. The institution gave the Throne estate a new social purpose. [2]

The estate woodland

Throne Wood lies between Whitewell Road and Antrim Road on Cave Hill’s eastern slope. The Woodland Trust’s 2016–21 management plan suggests that it was planted for Throne House in the early nineteenth century. Later paths followed routes associated with the house and hospital. The plan records improvements in 2009 and describes retained dead elm timber as a habitat for fungi and birds, connecting estate history with woodland management. [3]

People & connections

Denise Austin and Sheila

Belfast Zoo’s historical account records how keeper Denise Weston Austin took the young elephant Sheila to her family home on Whitewell Road during the Second World War. Sheila stayed there at night and returned to the zoo in the morning. The zoo identified Austin following a public appeal in 2009, using archive photographs and information from a surviving relative. Its account distinguishes these evening stays from the elephant’s continuing life at the zoo. [4]
