Place & story
A weaving factory and its neighbourhood
In the council’s Carrickfergus Through the Centuries, historian Philip Orr describes the Woodburn linen weaving company as a major Victorian employer. His account records a 40-acre works with 300 looms, a bleachworks and employment for 400 people at its height. Thirty workers’ houses were built nearby. [2]
Orr also connects the new church established at Woodburn in the mid-1860s with the people employed in local linen manufacture. The factory and congregation belong to the same account of a growing industrial community, in which work, housing and worship developed alongside one another. [2]
