Place & story
Spencer House
Spencer House, on the corner with Lower Garfield Street, was built in 1883 to designs by Young and Mackenzie. Its four storeys rise to an attic and a conical corner turret. Red brick, elaborate window surrounds and sculpted panels distinguish the building; the turret marks the view north along Royal Avenue. [2]
A bank becomes public space
At 2 Royal Avenue, OGU Architects and MMAS adapted the former Provincial Bank building for community use. Artists Jonathan Ross, Beth Milligan and Lyndsey McDougall contributed timber structures and suspended fabric screens. These divide the former supermarket interior into places for sitting, working and children’s play, while the fabric also reduces echoes. [3]
