Place & story

Early Silverbridge teams

The local club history identifies a team formed under the Silverbridge name in 1906, although it lasted only a year. Another affiliation followed around 1920. The account records changes of name during this period, a county semi-final appearance in 1924 and a runner-up finish in the junior league in 1936. These details show an interrupted early development rather than a single unbroken team history. [2]

People & connections

Jarlath Burns and the local club

Jarlath Burns’s association with Silverbridge extends beyond his county playing career. The GAA’s account of his election as its forty-first president records that he was his club’s secretary at the time and had served it in several roles over decades. Burns also played thirteen seasons for Armagh and captained the county to the 1999 Ulster senior football title. His accession to the presidency in February 2024 brought a long-serving Silverbridge club member into the association’s highest elected office. [3]

Donnelly’s Bar, December 1975

On 19 December 1975 gunmen attacked Donnelly’s Bar at Silverbridge, firing outside and then inside before an explosive device was thrown through the doorway. Three people died and others were injured. An RTÉ news report broadcast the following day covered the attack alongside the earlier bombing outside Kay’s Tavern in Dundalk. The archive preserves contemporary reporting of an evening of violence affecting communities on both sides of the border. [4]
