A school serving Cullen
The older school serving Cullen opened in 1847 at Lislehane Cross, beside the new Mallow–Rathmore road, following a site lease to Father Fitzpatrick in 1846. Boys and girls occupied separate rooms. A replacement school was built farther east along the road in 1938. Seán Tucker’s parish history records surviving school registers from 1864 in the county library and from 1918 at the school itself. A teacher remembered by a pupil
Matthew Murphy, born in Gortnacreha in 1899, recalled the influence of his Lislehane schoolteacher Seán Ó Cadhla in his Bureau of Military History statement. Ó Cadhla circulated An Claidheamh Soluis among senior pupils and encouraged discussion of its articles. Murphy also remembered taking part in Irish-language competitions around the district while still at school, linking his later Gaelic League interests with classroom experience. [3]
Collecting memories before a move
In April 2011, principal Hannah Kelleher appealed to former Cullen pupils at home and abroad for contributions to a school memoir. The appeal accompanied preparations to move to new premises. Contributors could send written recollections or recordings, with each account attributed to its author. The proposed collection aimed to preserve memories of earlier schools and school life for later generations. [4]
