Place & story

Limestone architecture on Strand Street

Skerries Carnegie Library has a limestone frontage with a tall central projection and lower bays on either side. The architectural inventory dates its construction to 1910 and attributes the design to Anthony Scott and his son William. Round-headed entrance doors, circular windows and carved stone detailing distinguish the façade. The original staircase and patterned tiled hall were also recorded in the inventory’s 2000 survey. A library opening towards the park

The council announced the restored library’s official reopening in January 2026. A substantial rear extension connected to the historic building on each floor, adding space for reading, study, meetings and events. Access to Floraville Park formed part of the scheme. Outside, work shared with neighbouring Saint Patrick’s Church replaced concrete footpaths with granite and limestone paving, linking the library’s renewal with changes to the surrounding streetscape. Skills demonstrated at the mills

A Nationwide report broadcast in July 2005 documented the mills after their restoration by FÁS and Fingal County Council. Engineer Eric Montgomery explained how the windmill could be turned partly away from strong winds. The programme also encountered the Skerries Mills Quilters meeting in the Watermill Café. Mechanical demonstrations and the practice of needlework thus appeared together in its account of the site’s new life. [4]
