Place & story
Gabriel McGoey and the new school
Gabriel McGoey arrived at Tang National School in 1980 and served for twenty-seven years. The community account of his retirement recalls a building project initiated in 1997 and the eventual move into new premises. A bog-oak sculpture representing the new school was presented to him at the celebration. This locally recorded tribute connects a particular teacher's service with the practical work of planning, fundraising and improving the village's educational facilities. [2]
An old school becomes a meeting place
Tang Muintir Community Council was established in 1999. Its account in the village's biodiversity plan includes the renovation of the old school as a community centre among its achievements. The centre subsequently accommodated dancing, fitness activities, parent-and-toddler gatherings and card games. Reusing the school kept a familiar building in collective use, while tree donations and planting projects extended the group's work into the village's public spaces. [3]
Recording the village’s wildlife
Ecologist Catherine O'Connell surveyed eight Tang locations for the 2022–2026 community biodiversity plan, including church grounds, cemeteries, the school and roadside spaces. Field visits took place in April and June 2022, supported by local residents. School pupils contributed eighty-seven bird and wildlife survey returns. The resulting plan proposed changes to mowing and more native planting, treating maintained village places as habitats as well as spaces for everyday use. [3]
The football club’s remembered generations
Tang GAA was formed in 1966. Its sixtieth-anniversary programme, announced in March 2026, combined remembrance of deceased members with games and a community gathering. The coverage also recalled the team that won Westmeath's intermediate championship in 1973, captained by Dermot Carey. These commemorations link the village club's competitive record with the players, families and supporters who sustained it beyond the field. [4]
