Place & story

A surviving estate building

The former steward’s house at Esker Beg preserves part of the service landscape associated with the demolished Mount Lucas House. Built around 1820, it has a compact two-storey frontage and a round-headed entrance with a carefully worked stone surround and petal-shaped fanlight. The architectural inventory also draws attention to its split-level stone outbuilding. These smaller buildings retain evidence of the estate after the loss of its main residence. [2]

Power from the cutaway bog

Mountlucas Wind Farm was commissioned in 2014 on cutaway peatland near Daingean. Its operator records twenty-eight turbines with an installed capacity of 84 megawatts. The wider bog covers about 1,100 hectares and belongs to the Derrygreenagh group. The project also developed a walking and cycling amenity and a learning hub explaining wind-energy technology, giving the former peat-production landscape additional uses beyond electricity generation. [3]

A campus built for training

Mountlucas also became a centre for construction training. A project account by Chancery Group records the building of a 700-square-metre workshop with a two-storey teaching area at the National Construction Training Centre in 2019. Poor ground conditions required piled foundations beneath the steel-framed structure. The existing training facilities continued operating during construction, allowing the campus to expand while courses were still being delivered. [4]
