Place & story
A stage for the community
Teacher Joe Mulrooney remembered the parish hall as a centre for Toormakeady’s Irish-language drama. Electricity made evening performances easier to stage, and a drama festival ran for six years, with a fortnight of plays each year. Mulrooney recalled President Éamon de Valera attending in 1960 and the excitement of a school production whose young performers included Mick Lally. His account also linked the opening of Gaeltarra Éireann’s knitting factory in 1950 with new employment opportunities in a community affected by emigration. [2]
