Place & story
A school for estate families
Lettergesh National School traces its beginnings to 1868, under Mitchell Henry’s patronage. The school’s account says the original building served the children of estate labourers and describes a mountain track linking it with Kylemore. Its replacement opened in 1976 directly across the road, continuing education beside the older school site. [2]
Plans for teachers’ houses
The Dictionary of Irish Architects records drawings dated 1877 for proposed teachers’ houses at Lettergesh National School. The designs included Gothic details, gables and decorative boards along the roof edges. The entry identifies no architect, and records a proposal rather than confirming that the houses were built.
