Place & story

The 1934 school

The school’s own history records that Canon John Considine built Labane National School in 1934. Its three teachers were Mrs Fahy, Mr Friel and Mr O’Meara. Later, the construction of the Labane bypass took away part of the playground. During the 1980s, the school received a new roof, toilets and central heating, while parish land enlarged its playing space. [2]

Making room for more pupils

An extension opened in 2008 provided four classrooms alongside a library, hall, special education rooms and staff facilities. A further classroom and special education teaching room followed in 2022. These additions continued the development of a school whose history also records Michael Burke’s long period as principal, from 1964 until 2006. [2]
