Place & story
A harbour facing Scotland
Donaghadee developed around the short sea route to Portpatrick, established in 1662. Irish Lights describes a crossing of about twenty-two miles, linking the County Down coast with Wigtownshire. The service eventually lost ground as larger vessels, difficult access and exposed conditions reduced its advantages. The arrival of railway connections did not prevent the route through Larne and Stranraer from taking over in 1871.[2]
The lighthouse on the pier
The present harbour was designed by John Rennie and built during the 1820s, using limestone brought from Anglesey. The lighthouse became operational in 1836. Its cut limestone tower was originally left grey; the familiar white finish was adopted later in the nineteenth century. Conversion to unattended electric operation in 1934 gave Donaghadee the distinction of being the first Irish lighthouse to use electricity.[2][3]
A working coastal town
The 1910 Ulster directory records cattle and farm produce as the town's chief exports. Its entries include a harbour master, lighthouse keeper, coastguard station, railway stationmaster and several boatowners. Schools and churches sat beside those maritime occupations. The directory therefore offers a useful dated picture of everyday institutions around the harbour.[4]
People & connections
Hugh Nelson and the Princess Victoria
The harbour also carries a history of rescue. On 31 January 1953 the ferry Princess Victoria sank during a severe gale east of Belfast Lough. Donaghadee coxswain Hugh Nelson received the RNLI Bronze Medal and the British Empire Medal for his conduct during the rescue. The institution's station history records his crew taking twenty-nine survivors from one ship's boat, one from another and one from a raft. These were individual people brought to safety through a difficult operation, while other lifeboats and ships also responded. Nelson's service connects the familiar harbour view with the practical skills and dangers of a working maritime community.[5]
Both censuses use the same 2015 settlement boundary. These exact counts cover usual residents in the settlement, rather than local government districts or historic counties. Other NISRA tables may use approximate counts.
