Place & story
A change of name
The railway station serving Killagan originally carried the name Bellaghy. The Irish Railway Record Society’s station index records its renaming on 1 January 1876 and notes that excursion trains continued to use it after regular services ended in 1971. The former station site remained part of the railway’s working infrastructure after passenger use ceased in 1973. [2] [3]
A working railway compound
In 2023, contractor FP McCann announced works at the Killagan permanent-way compound beside the level crossing and former station and goods shed. The project included regrading and resurfacing the yard, new fencing, lighting and utility corridors. Its stated purpose included improving access and preparing infrastructure for a future rail-maintenance vehicle access point. [3]
