Place & story

The fair behind the name

Donnybrook Fair began under a charter of 1204. A market for livestock and produce developed into a wider gathering associated with entertainment, drinking and fighting. Local residents and clergy eventually bought the patent to end it. The council's walking guide locates the fairground on land later used by the rugby ground and adjoining garage. Its reputation also survives in the English word donnybrook for a noisy brawl. [2]

Beaver Row and riverside work

The cottages of Beaver Row were built in 1811 for workers at a beaver-hat factory across the River Dodder. A wooden footbridge connected homes with the workplace; an iron bridge later replaced it. A former Wesleyan chapel behind the cottages adds another surviving trace of this working community. Together these features recall an industrial riverside within an area often associated with its later suburban houses. [2]

The Magdalene laundry

The institution that became Donnybrook's Magdalene laundry moved here in 1837, after the Religious Sisters of Charity took over an earlier Townsend Street institution. Justice for Magdalenes Research records its sale to a private company in 1992 and continued commercial laundry operation until 2006. It also documents women and girls who died in the institution. This history makes the site a place of institutional memory as well as industrial remains. [3]
