Place & story

The local museum

Local people established Kilmurry’s historical society in 1963 and opened the Terence MacSwiney Memorial Museum in 1965. A later purpose-built museum continued that work. President Michael D. Higgins officially opened the Independence Museum and Cultural Centre on 21 August 2016. [2] [3]

Evidence of the earlier school

The museum’s school-seat catalogue describes an application made by parish priest James Daly in July 1849. It recorded that the existing school had been established ten years earlier in an adjacent building. The application described seven desks and fourteen benches. Separate new boys’ and girls’ schools opened farther up the village in 1862. [4]
