Place & story
A river walk restored
Fowley’s Falls follows the Glenanniff River through a valley cut into blue limestone. Water descends over several separate rock steps on its journey towards Lough Melvin. A path-clearing scheme made the falls more accessible in the early 1980s, but the route deteriorated after that work ended. In 2003 Rossinver Community Development Company undertook its restoration, seeking to provide access while limiting disturbance to the river’s surroundings. [2]
A chapel becomes a community centre
Ballagh Church at Tullyskearney was built in 1850–51 by Belfast contractors. Services ended in the early 1960s, and its roof was removed in the late 1980s. Rossinver Community Development Company subsequently obtained a long lease and restored the building as the New Ballagh Centre. Young people from both sides of the border helped renew its roof and floor while learning construction skills through the Wider Horizons programme. [2]
Teaching organic growing
The Organic Centre gives Rossinver a distinctive modern building: architect Colin Bell designed its grass-covered roof. Its demonstration gardens and seven polytunnels provide practical settings for teaching organic cultivation. The educational programme also extends to skills such as building stone walls, preserving food and making ovens. Seasonal events connect those activities with harvests and biodiversity, bringing gardening and environmental education together in a centre serving residents and visitors. [3]
