Place & story
The chapel that became a national school
The Old School House at Kilbride began as a Catholic chapel in 1828, built through contributions from the congregation. Its T-shaped plan and pointed limestone openings preserve the earlier religious use. After the new church opened in 1864, the building became Crecora National School and continued in that role until 1936. Rehabilitation in 2004 brought another phase in the life of this adaptable village landmark. [2]
Saints Peter and Paul in 1864
The present Catholic church was built in 1864 and dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. Its stained glass includes a Sacred Heart window commemorating curate J. Tierney and an Assumption window presented by parishioners to Dean Edward Punch, parish priest from 1936 to 1970. The diocesan heritage account also records a holy-water font supported by two angel figures in the sacristy. [3]
Recording the old burial ground
The medieval church ruin and old graveyard stand in Glebe townland on the Patrickswell road. In 2011 local volunteers cleared the site, and a survey supported by Ballyhoura Development and archaeologist Colum Hardy recorded its headstones, stone markers and monuments. The parish account reports 1,006 markers catalogued and photographed. This work made a previously difficult-to-read burial landscape available as a documented local historical resource. [3]
