Place & story

Two periods on one church site

St John’s Church combines a nineteenth-century Gothic church with the freestanding tower of an earlier building. The architectural inventory dates the main church to 1860 and records the older tower as standing before 1762. Its octagonal stone spire remains a distinctive feature. An O’Grady memorial dated 1528 is set into the tower, adding an earlier family commemoration to a site altered across several centuries. [2]

A new community role

The Church of Ireland deconsecrated St John’s in 1999 as its congregation declined. From 2007, Knockainey Historical and Conservation Society undertook restoration, retaining stained glass, pews and interior fittings. The recovered building became a setting for concerts, weddings and community events. Its later history shows local conservation creating another use for an existing landmark while keeping much of the former place of worship intact. [3]

Folklore & tradition

Áine in the survey record

The nineteenth-century Ordnance Survey account records a belief that Lady Áine, daughter of Eogabhail, haunted the nearby hill in the form of a banshee. It also notes her appearance in the elegies of Munster poets. This is an attested description of local belief rather than a historical biography. The account connects the hill’s name, Áine’s literary presence and the tradition reported among people of the district. [4]
