Place & story
All Saints’ successive building phases
All Saints' church at Listernan began in 1832 and was later substantially rebuilt into its distinctive arrow-shaped plan. The National Inventory records a dedication in 1868 and an inscription dated 1874 on the entrance stonework. The dates show that its present form emerged through several stages. Rebuilding associated with Father John Finn continued beyond his death in 1872, rather than ending with a single opening ceremony. [2]
Glass, timber and memorials
The interior combines stone arcades with an exposed timber roof structure and a polygonal boarded ceiling. Stained glass donated in 1900 by Father Thomas Judge was followed by further windows in 1910 during Father John McDonnell's incumbency. Classical marble wall monuments provide another record of commemoration within the church. The National Inventory identifies these fittings and structural details as important parts of the building's artistic and technical interest. [2]
From Boleyboy to Listernan
The school's own account dates its opening at Boleyboy to 1874, with separate boys' and girls' schools. A replacement opened there in 1914, while the earlier building became a community centre. That second school closed in June 1992 because of its condition. Pupils moved into a new Listernan building that September, and the former school was demolished in 1993. A further extension followed at the new site in 2015. [3]
