Place & story
Mayo of the Saxons
Mayo Abbey's heritage committee dates the foundation associated with Colman of Lindisfarne to about 670. The community became known as Mayo of the Saxons. Bede mentioned it in his history of the English church, and Alcuin of York later corresponded with its monks. These connections place the settlement within a network linking western Ireland, Northumbria and the wider European church, rather than treating its history as an isolated local foundation. [2]
Saint Colman’s church
The old Saint Colman's church is dated 1845 and was erected under parish priest John Jennings. Its simple rectangular body, narrow pointed windows and tapering tower belong to a restrained Gothic design. The building was altered in 1896 and closed for regular parish use in 1978. Its roof was renewed in 2001. The preserved church is also associated with the 1998 screen adaptation of Amongst Women, for which part of the interior was redecorated. [3]
The school that opened in 1896
The old Mayo Abbey National School opened on 9 September 1896 after years of preparation. The school history records an approach to Lord Clanmorris's agents in 1888 and a parliamentary question in March 1896 about the delay in opening the new premises. Pupils and staff remained connected with that building until moving to a new school in May 2012. The dates distinguish the nineteenth-century schoolhouse from the modern institution that succeeded it. [4]
Community research and conservation
A heritage committee formed in 1993 promoted research, conferences and the preservation of the old church and schoolhouse. In 2023 it obtained Heritage Council support for a LiDAR survey of the monastic site and surrounding ground. The project aimed to map slight earthworks and inform future heritage planning. This work connects the conservation of visible buildings with investigation of the less obvious settlement traces still present within the village landscape. [2]
